About Me


Kelly Dowe Norrell is a freelance writer, editor and public relations specialist in Knoxville, TN.  Her work includes:

·         News and feature articles for newspapers and magazines. Recent examples include a lead article in Faith and Leadership, the online magazine of of Duke Divinity School; an article in Independent School, the magazine of the National Association of Independent Schools, three cover articles for EvaMag (Knoxville, TN) on local artists, a centerspread for Eastern Magazine on a new, $100 million science building at Eastern Kentucky University, and a variety of articles as a correspondent for the Knoxville News-Sentinel, including a monthly series of features on local writers.

·           Articles written on behalf of clients and published in newspapers and magazines in Knoxville, Nashville, Oak Ridge, Maryville and many other communities. Recent clients:  the Episcopal School of Knoxville; the Grace School of Limuru, Kenya; First Presbyterian Church of Knoxville and the Knoxville Writers’ Guild.

·         The Weekly Update, a current newsletter for the Knoxville Writers' Guild which has a distribution list of about 400; and Headlines, a weekly electronic newsletter written for 7 years for The Episcopal School of Knoxville and which had, at the end of that time, a distribution list of about 1000 and a 58 percent average open rate.

·         Webmaster of the Knoxville Writers' Guild website; co-designer of a new website now underway for The Episcopal School of Knoxville, and content manager and co-creator of its website from 2006-2012.(www.esknoxville.org) That website has gotten 1.5 million hits and more than 17,000 unique visitors over the last 12 months, and more than 160,000 hits per month

·         Small publications and newsletters including the East Tennessee Writer, an eight-page, monthly newsletter for the Knoxville Writers’ Guild  in Knoxville and The Ala-Arts in Montgomery, Al.

  • Public relations successes in various markets. Among these: 38% enrollment growth at The Episcopal School of Knoxville, bringing in more than $1 million in tuition, where she is Communications Director; a record level of participation in the Knoxville Writers’ Guild Summer Workshops when she was promoter in 2006-2009;  about  $50,000 raised for the Grace School in Limuru, Kenya using a video script and newspaper articles which she wrote.

  • Norrell earned a bachelor’s degree in American Studies from the University of Alabama. As winner of one of the first Rotary International Study Awards for Journalists, she also studied economics and politics of the Middle East at Durham University in the U.K. for one year. She  has studied graphic and web design in the Communications Graphics Technology program at Pellissippi State Technical Community College.
